Dark Side of the Mirror
Dark Side of the Mirror is a small retail emporium located in sunny (mostly) Bournemouth. We embrace a “Gothic” lifestyle, but also cater for genres such as Steampunk due to the sepia toned crossover with Goth; overall our aesthetic could be described as dark Bohemian. At the helm are myself, Vicci Johnson and my partner in both life and business Sarge MetalFatigue. I am responsible for the day to day running of the shop while Sarge is a body piercer of 30 years standing at a clinic a short distance away from Dark Side.
We carry a range of pre-loved clothing and footwear suitable for lovers of the quirky, flamboyant and creative, and a range of accessories and jewellery from Alchemy Gothic and other sources. Alongside there are many items suitable for home decor from suppliers such as Nemesis Now, and sourced from various mysterious locations. This includes taxidermy, which is ethically sourced by a highly qualified and respected professional taxidermist.
In addition one will find items associated with esoteric practices such as tarot cards, crystals, and a range of books on associated themes.
We support local makers and artisans and sell their wares on commission; we hope to provide an eclectic variety for our customers, and also support our local “alternative” community as much as possible. We collaborate with local alternative venues such as our local 90s themed bar Zephyr, metal venue The Anvil and award winning bar and restaurant Chaplins.
I provide tarot readings and am happy to take bookings during opening hours; I am also happy to bring this skill to corporate events and other appropriate gatherings and locations.
Sarge and I both have a strong background in live performance – I studied Stage Management, Technical Theatre and Design at Mountview Theatre School and have freelanced in design. Sarge has been both a model and a facilitator for suspension based performance art with such well known companies as Engineers of Desire and Aesthetic Meat Front aka AMF Korsets. I have been involved in a variety of these performances and suffice to say we do enjoy a bit of the theatrical!
We like to think of the Dark Side as a safe and welcoming space for anyone who enjoys the weird, the wonderful and the colourful and we are lucky to have many friends who regularly visit.
We hope that this website will give you a flavour of our bricks and mortar shop and allow you to access our items from a distance; at the very least we hope our blog posts will amuse or intrigue you, and we look forward to hearing your feedback!
